Welcome to Big Moves!
Big Moves Explained provides clear, accessible explanations for major stock price movements. We leverage decades of market experience and proprietary tools to identify the causes of big price moves, historical precedents, and potential implications. Our goal is to help readers better understand what is happening in the markets.
Why focus on Big Price Moves?
Whether you are a market maker, quant, or long-term investor, your profits and losses ultimately depend on price movements. There are many ways to make money in the markets, but they all rely on prices going up, down or staying steady. We considered including factors like dividends and yield, but even the best cash flows can be overwhelmed by price changes.
By explaining major price moves, we aim to provide insights relevant to all market participants. The challenge of consistently answering "why did XYZ stock move today?" was shockingly difficult over our decades at a major hedge fund. This daily question presents an opportunity to provide easy, relevant and credible insights.
Our Motivations
First, big price moves represent an entry point into one's market analysis process. We will have more to say on this topic in a future post.
Second, explaining daily price moves allows us to explore the capabilities of emerging AI technologies. As innovators earlier in our careers during the spreadsheet revolution, we recognize the transformative potential of new technologies like generative AI. Excitement is warranted.
Finally, this daily exercise stretches us to improve and provide value to readers. Every day brings an opportunity to learn, even through mistakes, as we build something better.
What to Expect
We will review the biggest daily price movers in our universe (S&P 500 plus select other names). Initially, we will focus on succinctly explaining the most plausible reasons behind each major price swing.
Within these explanations we will provide links to our BigPriceMovesExplained calls and to sources GPT itself used where possible.
Over time, we aim to provide deeper dives into specific companies and events. The goal is not only explaining what moved prices, but mapping those catalysts to their relevance for investors and the market.
